Frederica Freyberg:
Well, we began the program with a report on the Asian carp threat to Lake Michigan. We end the program tonight with a song about it, an irreverent holiday song written and performed by our irreverent singing commentator Peter Leidy. Here's Peter with tonight’s “End Insight” and a tune he calls “Asian Carp Are Coming to Town."
Peter Leidy:
You better watch out, you better beware. These ain't trout, so you better prepare. Asian carp are coming to town. Imported from China, in '73, they reproduce prolifically. Asian carp are coming to town. They're swimming up from down south, voracious appetite. They do not want to be kept out. They're looking for a fight. They been heading our way 50 miles a year, and as of today, they're almost here. Asian carp are coming to town. They come when you are sleeping, they come when you're awake. Swimming and a-leaping they want to own the Great Lakes. They'll make a mess ecologically and distress the fishing industry. Asian carp are coming to town. I spoke with one last week. He tried to be persuasive. He said, ‘We just want a peek.’ I said, ‘Get out, man, you're invasive.’ So if you should hear a knock at your door, careful, my dear, who you open it for, 'cause Asian carp are coming. That is why I'm strumming. Asian carp are coming to town.
Frederica Freyberg:
How does he think this stuff up? Peter Leidy. Peter's singing commentaries are musical expressions of his opinion. That is why we call them commentaries.
