Bottoms Up: Wisconsin's Historic Bars and Breweries
Wisconsin is a tavern state. That is a simple statement of fact, but behind it lies a complex and interesting brew of politics, economics, culture, and social mores, with many great hoppy stories mixed in between. The Wisconsin bar has come in many guises, from stagecoach inn and sample room to blind pig, speakeasy, and pharmacy and from cocktail lounge, theme bar, and disco to brewpub. Each of these forms reflects the character and values of a generation, so bars are a means to learn about Wisconsin's people. Bars can help reveal what we have believed and cherished and how those thoughts have changed with time. Bottoms Up is largely a historical documentary, but also a cultural documentary, looking at Wisconsin as a tavern state.
